The GE 5K Road Race

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I ran my second 5K on Sunday, The GE 5K Road Race that supported the Petit Family Foundation. I was proud to be  part of this fundraiser. My goal for this race was to try to beat my last 5K time by one minute. I ended up finishing with a time of 31:15, 53 seconds faster than my last 5K. Close enough for me.

You could get a free massage before the race if you wanted.

Dr. Petit spoke briefly before the race started. He ran the race also.

Ronald was there too and he was actually pretty funny. He started shouting, “You’re almost there!” to the runners as soon as the race began.

There were so many runners. They were everywhere! I like to start at the back of the pack but while waiting for the race to start more and more people came, and I ended up starting in the middle this time.

This guy won the race in a little over 15 minutes. Total! Crazy fast!

Here I am just about to cross the finish line. I am this close to getting sick and I look it too. For some stupid reason I decided to eat a GU energy gel about 15 minutes before the race started even though I had never had one before and didn’t know how my stomach was going to react to it. I can safely say I will never have one again. I had a really hard time swallowing it and then around mile 2 I started feeling like I was going to be sick and really didn’t totally shake it until after dinner last night.

This was taken after I consumed a good amount of water, some orange wedges and a yogurt. They had a ton of free food at this event.

My stomach didn’t recover enough to eat a DQ cone but I felt well enough to take a picture with one instead. Despite the Gu incident, it was a good day and a good race.

First Race Results

raceday1

I was a bundle of nerves on race day. The weather was cold and rainy until shortly before the race started and I was glad the rain stopped for the race. I don’t mind running in the rain when it’s warm but I was already cold and getting soaked wasn’t going to help that any.

raceday2

Ready, Set, Go! I started close to the back. Less people to pass me that way.

raceday3

I passed the lady in the green shortly after the race started and she promptly passed me a few minutes later. That’s me behind her in the white shirt. I struggled to keep up with her for the rest of the race and got it in my head that I was going to pass her again right at the end.

raceday4

I did everything I said I wasn’t going to do. I ran faster than my normal pace trying to keep up with other people even though there was a good chance I would burn out before the end of the race. I also do much better with a one minute walking break at the mile marks and though I did make myself walk twice, I could only last 20 seconds or so before I had to run again. Hearing people behind you catching up made it hard for me to walk.

Coming into the finish line. You’ll note I managed to pass the lady in green.

raceday6

Crossing the finish line! The adrenaline rush during the whole race was unreal!

raceday7

I did it! And cried like a baby when it was over. My time was 32:08 and about 3 minutes faster than I was able to run it on my own. I finished #183 out of 242 runners but the results only have the times for 210 runners posted. I have no idea why that is because they announced they had 242 people running.  I came in 9th out of 15 in my division and I was on cloud nine all day yesterday. I’m hoping that I will be less concerned with other people and less nervous for my next race. But I finished and I wasn’t last or second to the last or third to the last, so I made my goals! It was a good first race!

My First 5K

Friday, May 15th, 2009

I signed up for my first 5K run for this Sunday. Running a 5K has been a goal of mine since last year and after many injuries and then a broken foot I am finally going to do it. I am unbelievably nervous. I don’t know why I am this nervous. It’s not like I am trying out for the Olympics or something. But I am, very nervous that is. And I’m sure it’s going to get worse the closer it gets. One of my fears is being last. I don’t want to be last. I know someone has to be last, I just don’t want it to be me. To be honest, I don’t want to be second or third to the last either. I guess anything after that is OK. I’ve looked up finishing times in my age group from previous races and they are so much faster than me! How do people my age run that fast? I can’t imagine ever running that fast. And my second fear is not being able to finish. I was advised from another runner to just run my own race. If I let all the people passing me, and there will be many, to get to me I will try to run faster than I am able and burn out before it’s over. So I guess those are my goals. I want to finish and not be last or second to the last or third to the last. Simple goals, right? Ha.

So anyway, I’ll let you all know how I do. Or if I never bring this up again you can assume that it didn’t go well and I am upset and don’t want to talk about it. OK?

Have a great weekend!

Finished Opal Socks

Friday, March 6th, 2009

I finished the plain vanilla Opal Socks a few weeks ago and finally got around to taking some pictures.

Finished: 2/15/09

These feel a little snug and I think I am going to start using 64 stitches instead of 60 for my plain vanilla socks. But other than that, I really like these socks and the way the yarn patterned. The yarn had been in my stash for years.

Today I finished week 7 of the Couch to 5K plan. I started the plan 9 weeks ago and repeated 2 of the weeks twice. Week 7 consists of a 25 minute run with a brisk 5 minute walk before and after. I got through the runs on Monday and Wednesday, but today I had to take a little walk break in the middle for some reason. I kept thinking about how nice a little walk break would be and I think I talked myself right into it. Next week the runs are 28 minutes long and I am hoping they will be a little easier than this week.

We got money back from the State on our tax return this year, which was a pleasant surprise. We usually never get money back from the state. So we did our part to stimulate the economy and got ourselves a Wii Fit. I have been having fun with that on the days I don’t run along with riding a stationary bike. I love fitness toys! Well except for the stationary bike. I ride the bike, but I don’t like it.

Michael has to go to Boston this weekend for work and I could either stay here and work on the bathroom that I have been ignoring or go with him and have some fun. Which one do you think I picked? Yes, you would be right, I am going to Boston. I’ll have to amuse myself during the day while he is at work, but I think I can handle that. The weather is suppose to be in the 50’s!  I’ll be back sometime on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

WIP Wednesday 2/4/09

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Seeing as I showed you all my wip’s on Monday, I don’t have much new to post about today. The back of the Vogue Cardigan has grown a little, but everything else is pretty much the same.

vogue-vneck3

My goal for this week is to finish up the back and get started on one of the front pieces.

On the running front, which is also one of my wip’s, I started week 4 of the Couch to 5K plan today. It damn near killed me too. I can’t believe how much harder it was compared to week 3. By the middle I was dropping my pace to get through it and then dropped it even more by the end. Actually the last few minutes were hardly faster than a brisk walk. I am fairly certain I will be repeating this week before moving on to week 5. Slow and steady progress is my goal here.

And that’s all I have for you. The rest of my free time right now is being spent trying to get wallpaper glue off the bathroom walls. Fun! I think someone is coming in here while I sleep and adding more glue to the walls though because it is never ending!
